You can drain off water, sand and mud from the chain locker by means of a bilge eductor which is normally driven by water from the fire main or general service main.
The reason for using a bilge eductor is that sand and mud mixed with water would damage a normal pump.
Also they have drain pipe fitted to overboard with Check valves, so most of the time water goes off. During every drydocking chain locker is cleaned and inspected as part for survey item
