    The load diagram defines the power and speed limits for continuous as well as overloaded operation of an installed engine.
    Optimizing point is that rating to which turbocharger is matched to engine and at which engine timing and compression ratio are adjusted.

    Significance of Curve to chief engineer:

    o While taking ME performance, C/E can plot the performance value and ensure that engine is operated in continuous operating area (area between 3,4,5,7

    o During shallow passage or heavy weather or acceleration, area between 4 and 1 is available

    o Curve helps in identifying overload operation area and act accordingly

    o C/E can analyze the condition of hull and propeller by plotting the performance curve. So as hull is fouled, point shifts towards 2, hence more power is required for same speed

    o From line 5, C/E can analyse the m.e.p is within range
