  • OD BOX FOR PROPELLER HUB

    Dear Sir,

I m from Malaysia. Appointed as Marine Engineer on hydrography survey vessel. The vessel powered by 2 Controllable pitch propeller model HDX 40 (Berg Propulsion AB). Recently, the vessel facing a problem on port cpp which is the ahead or astern direction cannot control by the manoeuvre valve. The symptom are as follows:
    1. The PTO or electrically driven pump working at normal pressure.
    2. Seawater ingress found in the propeller hub.
    3. Previously there is oil leakage at oil distribution for propeller hub suspected due to oil seal damage.
For your information, there are 2 types of oil used in the system:
    1. SAE 30. Oil is supplied under pressure from oil distributer through piping in the hollow propeller shaft to move hydraulic piston.
    2. Shell Omala 320. The oil is to lubricate the propeller hub mechanism and feedback pipe running in the hollow bored shafting.

In your opinion, is it possible the leakage of oil distribution for propeller reduce lubrication of the hub mechanism and cause the damage of seal between blades then allow sea water coming in.

    Thank you
