GP Rating different from deck and engine

I have recently completed my 12th in commerce with maths and I wish to join merchant navy.However,being in commerce,I am eligible only for gp rating and not for deck or engine department.My relative was a captain in deck department,now retired.Please tell me whether I can also become a captain through gp rating path and if not then what is the highest designation of gp rating.

AnkitDasture Since you had commerce in 12th, you will be eligible on the basis of class 10th science subject.
