hi, my son is in the 12th std. studying science and keen on joining merchant navy as deck cadet.
academically he is brilliant and ready to face challenges. what i wanted to know is
the merchant navy still a good choice as on today 2016 where it seems the supply is more than demand.

    thanks,

    warm regard's,

Vinay Pai as per the current market situation, the job crunch will be remain for next couple of year. Cannot predict the market post that.

Yes, the crunch is in all the sectors. If I specifically talk about maritime sector, the only problem is- the course is specialised to navigation and deck operation, hence you find it difficult to switch the sector in case you did not find any job on ships. You also need to spend specific time onboard ships as a trainee to complete required teatime for giving further exams which will allow you to rise up in the rank hierarchy as an officer. Looking at the current scenario, if you do not get job on ship as a trainee, you won't be able to become a navigation officer.

ok. makes sense. thx anish. spoke to an executive at anglo eastern and she said sailing is 100% guaranteed as they are
the largest shipping managers handling many ships. msc also the second largest shipping co. almost said
the same thing provided my son clears all the requirement.
how are the prospects at the engine side if my son decides to go for 4 yrs. marine engineering.
please advice as he he is hell bent on joining the merchant navy as one of our neighbours is a 1st
officer at msc. thank you for your valuable time sir.

100% Placement: Yes, if your son goes through sponsorship else have to wait for year or 2 to go onboard....my freind waited 2 years to go to ship for training who is passed out from anglo.
Engineering degree has an advantage to shift to land as it is equivalent to mechanical degree. Deck side you can shift to land if you gain experience. Please do take a psychological test for shipping (pre joining this career) to understand if your son is fit for sea or not.
