How is motor speed regulated in a pump controlled hydraulic system?

  • #2
Normally a variable-displacement pump controls flow to the motor. This configuration is commonly known as a hydrostatic transmission. In anther method, a proportional or servovalve powered by a constant-pressure source, such as a pressure compensated pump, drives the motor.

A simple and cheap solution is to use a pressure compensated hydraulic pump and use a directional valve to control the rotation of the hydraulic motor. It's up to the hydraulic job requirements the solution choosen. While an hydrostatic transmission was one of the best solution in the past, nowadays there are smarter solutions, fixed displacement pumps driven by variable speed driven electric motors are the top solutions especially when you put the energy bill (or pollution) into account.
